Zoom Guide For Dancers

Everything You Need To Know Before You Take An Online Class

by The Streamlined Studio

We are living through an unprecedented time and as dancers, we have had to adapt to a whole new world of online education. Even though it’s great to still be able to connect with our classmates, teachers, and use dance as our outlet during COVID-19, dancing at home has been a huge transition.

Though you know our way around the dance studio, adapting to this “new normal” of digital classes can be overwhelming. Not the same floor your feet are used to, not the same sound surrounding the studio or big mirrors you can see your friends in – am I right?!

The Streamlined Studio has been using Zoom on the daily well before our dance world turned digital and we want to share that knowledge with you! Here is a guide to help you with the technical details and provide you tips for a successful class so you can focus on what you know- dancing!

After all, dance class should be an escape from all the current stressors of the world. Let us take care of the rest!

BEFORE YOU JOIN CLASS:

  •  MAKE SPACE! Clear at least a 6’ x 6’ dance area. Make sure to remove all trip hazards (toys, cords, etc.)
  • GET YOUR TECH! Download the Zoom app (https://zoom.us/download) and create a free account.
  • BE PREPARED! Grab a water bottle and start moving your body!

HOW TO JOIN A CLASS:

1) Sign into the Zoom Application.

2) Click your class Zoom link and the application will launch.

3) If the Zoom link you clicked does not contain the password (ex: https://zoom.us/j/986835975?pwd=QVBJV) you will be prompted to enter the meeting password.

4) If your teacher has enabled the ‘waiting room’, you will see a blank screen with ‘please wait, the meeting host will let you in’.

5) Once your teacher has admitted you into the room, you will enter the meeting.

ONLINE CLASS ETIQUETTE:

  • Make sure your teacher can see you by enabling your video. To do this, click on the camera icon at the bottom of the screen and select your device camera.
  • Make your teacher’s video front and center by ‘Right clicking’ your teacher’s video and select ‘Pin Video’.
  • Make sure your teacher knows who you are! To rename yourself, click participants and then hover over your device name and click ‘more’ then ‘rename’.
  • Be polite and keep your microphone on mute by clicking the microphone icon at the bottom of the screen until the teacher opens up for questions or conversation. Your microphone icon will have a red line through it when you are muted.

You’ve got this dancers! We are so lucky to have dance as our outlet to continue to express ourselves and stay active. Remember, this is uncharted territory for everyone involved and we are all doing our best to make lemonade out of lemons- teachers, students, and parents alike.  Keep doing what you know best, focus on your love of dance, and if you find yourself overwhelmed we are here to help!

You can do this!
